Assumptions Mapping Template

What is the Assumptions Mapping template?

Take assumptions related to your solution or product and map them on a ready-to-use template. Visualize which options should be taken into consideration and should have dedicated resources. Get your team excited about experimentation on things that you think matter.

The Assumptions Mapping template can help you further explore the following assumptions:

  • Feasible — Can we do this? Ask yourself if you can allow your team to spend most (or all) of the time on particular projects.
  • Desirable — Do they want this? Ask yourself if you can provide enough evidence to prove that your customers need this specific feature, solution, app, etc.
  • Viable — Should we do this? Ask yourself if you have enough knowledge to reach, obtain, or support your customers.

Use the answers generated to proposed questions and drag them into appropriate quadrants on the Assumptions Matrix. Point out which of the opinions are critical, non-critical, known, or unknown. Perform further investigations only on assumptions that land in the area dedicated specifically to experiments.

What are the benefits of the Assumptions Mapping template?

Thanks to the Assumptions Mapping template, you can:

  • Validate any of the assumptions about your projects.
  • Identify any weak spots in your solution or product and act accordingly.
  • Prioritize the assumptions that might threaten your success.
  • Prevent wasting money, energy, and time on projects that won’t bring you or your customers any value.
  • Have a research and testing plan for your current or future ventures.

How to use the Assumptions Mapping template in a few steps?

  1. Open the template on a new whiteboard or add it to an already existing one.
  2. Start the exercise from the first frame and finish the sentences written on color-coded sticky notes. Provide straightforward answers regarding feasibility, desirability, and viability.
  3. Drag and drop the sticky notes on the Assumptions Matrix. Decide in which quadrant they should be placed: critical, non-critical, knowledge, or assumption.
  4. Focus on the area with the experiment phase and plan your next steps only for the sticky notes added there.
