Feature Audit Template

What is the Feature Audit template?

A Feature Audit template is a pre-designed framework used to assess and evaluate existing features of a product or service. It provides a structured approach to review each feature and determine its relevance, effectiveness, and alignment with business goals. The template includes a set of criteria that helps identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas of improvement.

By conducting the feature audit, you can gain invaluable insights into which features should be retained, enhanced, or removed. The visual representation of the feature audit board allows to categorize and assess features based on their impact, value, or adoption. It enables Product Managers and teams to make more informed decisions about feature prioritization, product roadmap, and meeting user needs.

What are the benefits of the Feature Audit template?

Thanks to the Feature Audit template, you can:

  • Check the effectiveness of your product UI and layout.
  • Remove unnecessary, unpopular, or unused features from your product by mapping them on two dimensions: adoption and frequency.
  • Improve the visibility of specific features while also increasing the frequency with which your customers use them.
  • Discover how to improve product performance by fixing the cumbersome features for your customers.
  • Get an objective evaluation of customer engagement with your product.

How to use the Feature Audit template in a few steps?

  1. Open the Feature Audit template on a new whiteboard or add it to an already existing one.
  2. List your product features in the first designated frame. Do it in one of two ways: write down feature names on sticky notes or paste Jira issues directly to your whiteboard.
  3. Drag and drop the listed features onto a table to recognize their frequency (how often people use the feature) and adoption (how many people use the feature).
  4. Decide whether to keep or remove the features in your product by taking a look at where you placed them:
  • used all the time, most of the time, some of the time, or none of the time;
  • used by all the users, most of the users, some of the users, or none of the users.

Focus on the features that end up in the top right area of the table.
